Abstract

Universitas Pelita Harapan adalah salah satu universitas global yang ada di Indonesia dimana terdapat keragaman budaya yang dapat mempersiapkan mahasiswa agar lebih termotivasi dan berpartisipasi dalam lingkungan global. Sehingga terjadi proses adaptasi yang dialami mahasiswa luar negeri Universitas Pelita Harapan dan dilakukan penelitian untuk mengetahui secara mendalam mengenai tahapan proses adaptasi serta strategi public relations dari Universitas Pelita Harapan sebagai global campus. Yang menjadi objek penelitian adalah mahasiswa luar negeri Universitas Pelita Harapan angkatan 2012 dan Universitas Pelita Harapan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan metode penelitian studi kasus. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara mendalam kepada sepuluh mahasiswa dan head section divisi Public Relations Universitas Pelita Harapan. Dibahas mengenai proses adaptasi, Kurva U, Kurva W, serta mengenai strategi Public Relations. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa terjadi akulturasi dan dekulturasi budaya dalam skala kecil serta asimilasi budaya pada mahasiswa yang telah tinggal sangat lama di Indonesia. Mahasiswa pertukaran pelajar mengalami tahapan Kurva U, sedangkan mahasiswa luar negeri yang pernah tinggal di Indonesia dan sering berpindah-pindah tempat mengalami tahapan Kurva W. Untuk image Universitas Pelita Harapan sebagai global campus, strategi yang dilakukan bersifat proaktif, dilakukan dari tahapan perencanaan sampai evaluasi dengan berfokus pada publik media. / University of Pelita Harapan is one of the global universities in Indonesia, which provides a cultural diversity that prepares the students to be motivated and participates in a global society. Therefore, an adaptation process occurs to the international students of University of Pelita Harapan. A research is conducted to study deeply about the steps of adaptation process and University of Pelita Harapan’s public relations strategy as a global campus. The research objects are University of Pelita Harapan’s international students batch 2012 and the university itself. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach using study case research method. Data collection is obtained by in-depth interview with ten students and also with the head section of public relations division of University of Pelita Harapan. Concepts discussed are the adapation process, u-curve, w-curve, and public relations strategy. The research has shown that cultural acculturation and deculturation occurs in a small portion and cultural assimilation to a student who has lived in Indonesia for a long time. The exchange students experienced the phases if u curve, where the students who had live in Indonesia before or migrates a lot experienced the phases in w-curve. University of Pelita Harapan’s image is maintained by proactive strategies, starting from planning to evaluation, focusing on media publics.
