Abstract

(p value = 0,004; OR = 2,670; 95% CI = 1,361 – 5,239)/ The prevalence of refractive errors among medical students is still quite high, which is 61,3% with the prevalence of smartphone addiction is 81,3%. The previous study stated that there was an association between smartphone usage with the degree of myopia. Despite excessive usage of smartphone might increase the risk of someone is having the refractive errors, there are still many people who use smartphone excessively, especially those who have refractive errors. This study aims to determine the smartphone addiction among the medical students of Universitas Pelita Harapan batch 2017 with and without refractive errors. This study uses observational study with cross-sectional study design. There are 187 participants in this study, whereas the participants are the medical students of Universitas Pelita Harapan batch 2017. The data retrieval was started from February until April 2020 using Smartphone Addiction Scale – Short Version (SAS-SV) questionnaire. The retrieved data was tabulated using Microsoft Excel and analyzed with Chi-square methods using SPSS software version 25. From 187 participants, there are 19 excluded participants, therefore, there are 169 participants data that can be processed and analyzed. From 169 data, there are 69,8% medical students with refractive errors, 30,2% medical students without refractive errors, and 59,8% medical students that addicted to smartphone. Based on the analysis results, there are significant comparison of smartphone addiction among medical students of Universitas Pelita Harapan batch 2017 with and without refractive errors. (p value = 0,004; OR = 2,670; 95% CI = 1,361 – 5,239)
