Abstract

Family business is one of the most contributing aspects towards Indonesia’s economy. However, family business is hard to maintain as they have certain weaknesses especially on financial structure, strategic planning, business risk management and even succession planning. This research will focus on one of the weakness, which is succession planning. Indonesia’s economy depends much on family businesses. However, according to research, 32.2% of family businesses have not prepared for succession planning even though it would affect the survival rate of family business. Questions are being provoked regarding whether succession planning has an impact towards the survival of family business and what the different components in succession planning are needed so that family business can survive for the long-term. The company chosen is PT. Boraspati Express, a tourism family business located in Medan, Indonesia. The methods used in this quantitative research are descriptive analysis, validity test (rtable=0.5140), reliability test, correlation test (value= 0.803), linear regression test, linearity test, normality test, determination test (R-squared value= 0.644) and hypothesis testing. From this research, it is revealed that succession planning is strongly and positively correlated to survival of family business, although there are also some variables other than succession planning that can affect the survival. The types of succession planning are training, business continuity planning, family involvement and succession management. Training correlates with training and improving the skills of employees in the company. Business continuity planning correlates with choosing the right successor for the company, family involvement correlates with the family members working and making impacts in the company and succession mmanagement correlates with the financial preparation for the company future changes.
