Abstract

Blood Pressure Variability or BPV is closely related to cardiovascular events so that an increase in BPV can produce negative effects on the health of workers. BPV is influenced by many factors and one of them is the work of sympathetic nervous system. Shift workers are especially prone to develop sleep disorders and other health problems in terms of the circadian system and sympathetic nerve system. However, due to different BPV measurement methods, the aim of this study is to determine whether or not there is a very short term difference in BPV between nurses who work shifts and nurses who work non-shifts at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village. This study uses a cross-sectional study design and analytical method in which blood pressure measurements are performed 3 times with a course of 5 minutes using an automatic blood pressure monitor. BPV measurements were done by calculating the delta, ARV, and COV blood pressure. The data is then analyzed using the T-independent test by Statistical Program for Social Science (SPSS 23.0). The result of 68 samples of shift and non-shift nurses at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village is that there are differences in systolic BPV between shift and nonshift nurses where shift nurses have higher systolic BPV. There were significant results on the systolic delta (p = 0.006), ARV (p = 0.015), and COV (p = 0.008). No significant result in BPV diastolic. This study shows that the systolic BPV of shift nurses is higher than that of non-shift nurses.
