Abstract

Background: Stroke is the second largest cause of death in Indonesia. The prevalence of stroke patients in Indonesia is increasing from 7 to 10.9 per thousand within a period of 5 years. On stroke cases, it is found that there is inflammatory response that will increase leukocyte count. Increase of leukocyte count may leads to negative aspects towards severity of stroke. Therefore, it is needed to have a quick and precise handling on every stroke diagnosis to reduce the risks of mortality and morbidity. There are correlations of leukocyte count and the severity of ischemic stroke. For that reason, it is required an assessment using NIHSS scoring scale to evaluate the severity of ischemic stroke. Objective: The aim of this research is to know if there is any correlation between leukocyte count and the severity of stroke on patients with ischemic stroke in Siloam General Hospital. Method: This research uses an observational study method with a cross-sectional design of 51 ischemic stroke patients in Siloam General Hospital and fulfill the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result: Data was obtained from 51 samples through medical record data. The data was analyzed using Spearman’s rank-order correlation method. This research shows that the correlation of leukocyte count and the severity of stroke on patients with ischemic stroke in Siloam General Hospital is non-significant with correlation coefficient (r) 0.192, p-value 0.176, and coefficient of determination (R2) 0.036 with positive correlation. Conclusion: There is non-significant positive correlation between leukocyte count and the severity of stroke on patients with ischemic stroke in Siloam General Hospital.
