Abstract
Face-to-face teaching practices have been transformed into a virtual classroom in the online learning environment. The online learning process is more flexible, whereby students are allowed to have more freedom in their self-directed learning. Unfortunately, since students are unfamiliar to work independently, students may misuse their freedom and choose to be not engaged. Christian education aims to guide students towards the source of the absolute truth. Accordingly, Christian teachers serve as guides for students to be responsible disciples of Christ. Then, to effectively guide the students in the process of acquiring knowledge, students should first engage in a positive classroom environment. During the second field experience program, the researcher found a major issue of ineffective classroom rules that affect student behavioral engagement. Students were behaviorally disengaged, thus, they exhibited disruptive behavior during the lesson. The aim of this study is to critically discuss the Christian teachers’ role as guides in improving students’ behavioral engagement through effective classroom rules. Thereby, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive approach to achieve the aim of the paper. The result of this study shows that effective classroom rules consider the importance of being consistent in practicing and reminding the students of the rules. The challenge was the limited time for the second field experience program. The suggestion is for future researchers are to conduct interviews and implement various strategies to better establish effective classroom rules.
