Abstract
Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are two commonly used parameters for body composition that are relatively easy to measure. Maximal VO2 (VO2 max) is the estimated amount of oxygen that the human body can utilize during relatively intense exercise. Previous studies have shown that VO2 max is correlated with reduced risk for heart disease, which are more prominent in males. Medical students on average tend to have high academic demands and busy schedules, which may affect their diet as well as their physical activity. Aim: To examine the relationship between BMI and waist circumference towards VO2 max among male medical students in Pelita Harapan University. Hypothesis: Male students with higher BMI and longer waist circumferences achieve lower VO2 max values. Method: This is a cross-sectional observation study. The sample for this study is gathered using convenience sampling, with a target of 103 respondents that are all male medical students from Pelita Harapan University. Results are processed with T-test analysis as well as Pearson’s correlation using GNU PSPP version 1.2.0. Results: The results of the study, analyzed with T-test and Pearson’s correlation, showed a value of p = 0,000 for both tests. There is a difference between the average VO2 max level between obese and normal populations, and there is a significant correlation between BMI and VO2 max, and waist circumference and VO2 max. Conclusions: There is a difference between VO2 max values between normal and obese subjects. There is a weak negative relationship between WC and BMI with VO2 max.
