Abstract

Blindness guidance application is an android application that is designed to help people with vision impairment or disability to navigate comfortably and safely to their destinations. Now, navigation applications such as Google Maps cannot be used by those who suffer from visual impairment diseases or visual disability because those applications alone do not implement safety features such as suitable user interface for visually impaired users so that the users can navigate comfortably, safely, and most importantly with confidence. With that in mind, it is best to build and design a navigation app like Google Maps with those extra features specifically designed for visually impaired users to reach new destinations safely. User Interface will be well equipped with text-to-speech and speech-to-text capabilities. This way, visually impaired users can navigate through the application easily. Google Maps Platform will also be implemented in this application. This application will use the SpeechRecognizer library to translate users’ speech into processable data that will be used within the system. The TextToSpeech library will also be used to translate rendered text to audio that can be understood by the user. These features will help visually impaired users to navigate without worrying about their disabilities. The user experience of the built system is tested on blind people from Yayasan Peduli Kesejahteraan Tunanetra, where the survey subjects are given 14 questions to 6 respondents that are based on 6 aspects. These aspects are attractiveness, perspicuity, efficiency, dependability, stimulation, and novelty. The average score of these aspects are 5.70, 5.58, 5.39, 5.08, 5.92, and 5.833 out of a maximum of 7, respectively. Based on the results, it can be said that this application could help people with visual impairment to navigate the world as if they have perfect vision.
