Abstract

This research aims to: (1) search, find, and analyze the conception of the Copyright protection against creations in a form of pictures/ pictorial character that is used in the comics medium in Indonesia, and (2) search, find, and analyze how the implementation of norms concerning the Copyright protection against creations in a form of pictures/ pictorial character that is used in the comics medium in Indonesia. History records that in Indonesia, comics began appearing in the mass media before World War II. Dutch-language daily called De Java Bode (1938) put in a comic created by Clinge Doorenbos entitled Flippie Flink in the children's section. In 1930, a major newspaper in Malay language called Sin Po, put in a comic strip created by Kho Wang Gie, which then creates a character/ human character named Put On. Then at the beginning of World War II, appears someone named Nasrun A S with a story about an ancient legends entitled Mentjari Puteri Hidjau. In 1954, Indonesian comic creators began to emerge, one of them was Kosasih with his comic titled Sri Asih. Kosasih was an Indonesian comic legend and called the "Father of Indonesian Comics". Comics journey in Indonesia continue to run and evolve along with the times, in the 1960s until the 1980s emerged several creators with their popping images/ pictorial characters used in the comics medium, among others, Si Buta Dari Goa Hantu, Mandala Siluman Sungai Ular, Gina, Gundala Putera Petir, Godam, and so forth. In the 1990s Indonesian comics experienced a decline as a result of the invasion of imported comics which is more fancied among the comic readers in Indonesia. In recent years the Indonesian comics began to rise again, marked by the publication of comic titled Volt in 2013, published by Skylar Comics, then the the republishing of some comics, such as Mandala Siluman Sungai Ular, Gundala Putera Petir, Gina, and so forth. Copyright protection toward a picture/drawing used in the comics medium in Indonesia needs to be explored, so that the creators can understand about the copyright protection toward their creations, obtain the moral protection, and gain maximum economic benefits in accordance with Act No. 19 of 2002 concerning Copyright.
