Abstract

In Indonesia today, female politicians are still notably absent from the political sphere compared to their male counterparts. This information is supported by staggeringly low statistical data of Indonesian women who are members of parliament. This research aims to explore how the process of framing is used in the media to portray Indonesian female Politicians. The theory used in this research is Framing Theory, while the approach used is Qualitative Framing Analysis. The data analyzed comes from two newspapers, Suara Pembaruan and Republika. There were 20 articles in total; 10 from Suara Pembaruan, and 10 from Republika that were collected from the period of January – April 22, 2013. The analysis process was examined by Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki’s framing model. The results of this research show a supportive, yet undermining portrayal of Indonesian female politicians with tendency of discrimination and stereotyping from both newspapers. The way each newspapers portrayed Indonesian female politicians proved to be a reflection of their own specified ideologies. Cara masing-masing surat kabar menggambarkan politisi perempuan Indonesia terbukti menjadi cerminan ideologi tertentu masing-masing surat kabar
