Abstract

The Islamic State emerged as one of the largest and most brutal radical Islamic organizations in history, reaching a wider audience and a large number of members through online recruitments and propaganda through social media and instant messaging applications. The objectives of this research are to identify the methods of recruitment used by the Islamic State in Indonesia and uncover the reasons why these methods were successful. This research uses qualitative approach and process-tracing method to identify the methods used to recruit Indonesian fighters and the event-structure analysis to find correlations within the cases of recruitment and have found that the most common methods are through socithis al media platforms and family connections. This research also found that the recruitment methods are successful because the Islamic State was able to take advantage of prospective recruits’ dissatisfaction towards certain aspects of their lives and formed an idea that the caliphate is a utopian heaven with solutions to their physical and psychological problems through the use of narrative research to find recounts of Indonesian recruits and analyzing them with the illustrative analysis method through the lens of Constructivism and persuasion concept. Despite the Islamic State’s rapid deterioration and loss of territories in recent years, hard power is not enough to defeat them. As long as the power of ideas within the supporters of the Islamic State is yet to be eradicated, Indonesian citizens will still be at risk of falling victim to radicalization and extremism under the guise of better living or jihad.
