Abstract

In today’s globalized world, many families have moved from country to country, or have interacted with-two or more cultural environments for a significant period of time. The children in these families will automatically spend great chunk of their lives outside of their parent’s country. These children are identified as Third Culture Kids (TCK). TCKs may sometimes face challenges due to their cross culture lifestyle. The purpose of this study is to see the extent of these challenges especially in an educational context and to grasp the teachers’ perspective of these challenges. Added to that, the researcher hopes to help aid schools, teachers, as well as other researchers in finding ways to help TCKs resolve these challenges. The researcher conducted a case study research in order to obtain the purposes of this study. The researcher observed five TCKs in 5th Grade at XYZ International School. The observation took place during the researcher’s four�month practicum at XYZ International School. The data was collected using student questionnaire, teacher observation, and interview. After the data collection, the data was analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model of data analysis. The results showed that each TCK struggled with different things. There were many components that affected these struggles; some were culture related, and others were not. However, the uniqueness of XYZ International School also aided the TCKs in facing a few of these struggles./Di era globalisasi seperti sekarang ini, banyak keluarga berpindah dari satu negara ke negara lainnya dan berinteraksi dengan dua atau lebih lingkungan budaya untuk suatu periode waktu yang signifikan. Anak-anak dari keluarga yang seperti penulis jelaskan, menghabiskan sebagian besar hidup mereka di luar negara asal orang tua mereka. Anak-anak dengan latar belakang demikian diidentifikasi sebagai Third Culture Kids (TCK). Anak-anak yang tergolong sebagai TCK cenderung berhadapan dengan tantangan yang berkaitan dengan gaya hidup dari budaya yang berbeda. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat sejauh mana para TCK menghadapi tantangan-tantangan, khusunya pada conteks pendidikan, dan untuk memahami perspektif guru pada tantangan�tantangan ini. Peneliti berharap melalui penelitian ini dapat membantu sekolah, guru-guru maupun peneliti lain untuk mencari cara untuk membantu TCK menyelesaikan tantangan-tantangan. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode studi kasus. Peneliti melakukan observasi pada 5 siswa yang teridentifikasi dengan TCK pada kelas 5 Sekolah Internasional XYZ. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan angket, observasi guru, dan wawancara. Teknik analisis data menggunakan model analisis data Miles dan Huberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa setiap TCK berhadapan dengan jenis�jenis kesulitan yang berbeda. Banyak komponen yang menjadi penyebab dari berbagai jenis kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh siswa TCK. Sebagian faktor berhubungan dengan masalah kebudayaan dan sebagian lagi tidak. Walaupun demikian, keunikan yang dimiliki oleh Sekolah Internasional XYZ turut berperan dalam membantu TCK dalam menghadapi kesulitan-kesulitan ini.
