Abstract

Keberadaan sosial media dan Internet di zaman sekarang adalah sebuah tren yang sangat menonjol yang peminatnya tidak akan berkurang dalam waktu dekat. Dengan teknologi yang sangat maju sekarang ini, dapat dikatakan bahwa semua orang yang memiliki koneksi internet akan dapat membuat akun-akun media sosial yang dapat menunjukkan kepribadian mereka kepada orang-orang yang ada di kehidupan mereka dan orang-orang yang bahkan belum pernah mereka temui sebelumnya. Pinterest adalah salah satu dari berbagai macam media sosial yang ada sekarang ini. Sejak peluncurannya di Amerika pada tahun 2011, Pinterest telah membuat sebuah gebrakan baru di dunia media sosial dengan fitur-fitur uniknya yang belum dimiliki oleh media sosial pendahulunya. Salah satu hal yang paling menarik dari Pinterest adalah penggunanya yang kebanyakan adalah perempuan, walaupun Pinterest bukanlah media sosial yang ditujukan khusus untuk perempuan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan kemudian menganalisa kegunaan dan gratifikasi yang didapatkan oleh mahasiswi-mahasiswi perempuan yang belajar di Universitas Pelita Harapan dari media sosial Pinterest. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan penelitian kualitatif. Penulis kemudian melakukan wawancara mendalam kepada ke-enam mahasiswi Universitas Pelita Harapan yang adalah pengguna Pinterest dan menggunakan teori Uses and Gratifications untuk media massa. Dari serangkaian penelitian yang telah dilaksanakan, penulis pada akhirnya mendapatkan kesimpulan bahwa setiap mahasiswi yang diwawancara memiliki motif-motif yang berbeda dalam menggunakan Pinterest; dari mulai untuk mencari inspirasi, mencari referensi, menghabiskan waktu, dan sebagainya. Walaupun setiap mahasiswi memiliki pengalaman yang berbeda dari penggunaan Pinterest, mereka semua menyetujui bahwa menggunakan Pinterest adalah kegiatan yang menyenangkan dan memuaskan. / The existence of social media these days has been a prominent trend that does not look like will be fading away anytime soon. With the advanced technology that are around right now, it can be said that almost everyone that have an advantage of an internet connection would be able to create themselves an online persona and an online existence. Pinterest is just one of the many varieties of social media that is around right now. Pinterest is a social media site that has been around since the year 2011. Ever since its conception and launch, Pinterest has taken the social media world by storm with its rapid growth of popularity. What is interesting about Pinterest, is the fact that although Pinterest is not initially purposed for women, it had been noticed that Pinterest is higher in popularity amongst the female demography. This research project is aimed to analyze the usage and the gratifying feelings that the young females of Universitas Pelita Harapan get from and out of Pinterest. By using the qualitative research approach in the Uses and Gratifications Theory for mass media, author conducted the research process by designing a series of questions that are based on the Uses and Gratifications Theory of mass media to then ask six female informants that are all students in the Universitas Pelita Harapan. After conducting the research, the conclusion that author was able to retrieve is that although most of these women use Pinterest with different motives, such as for inspiration, encouragement, and reference; they all agree that using Pinterest is a gratifying experience overall, because it always able to enrich one’s imaginations and inspire users with the viewing of beautiful imageries that are displayed
