Abstract

The Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA). / The European Union and Canada particularly have a good relationship in the economy sector. The economic relationship between the two has even developed rapidly over the last 4 decades. A lot of bilateral negotiations have been done by both of them but there is no single broad-based, binding agreement to discuss European Union economic relations with Canada as a whole. Both of them finally made the decision to negotiate a comprehensive economic and trade agreement called The Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA). This study aims to examine the economic interests that the European Union and Canada want to achieve in CETA. The main approach used in this research is the perspective of neoliberalism, using the concepts of international organization, national interests, foreign policy, economic interest, international trade and foreign investment, international cooperation, and interdependence. The research method used is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques are carried out through the secondary data collection techniques, namely through library research and online data search. The data that has been obtained will be analyzed using narrative analysis and event structure analysis. The results of this study found that the relationship between the two reflects an asymmetrical interdependence, where even though the strengths of the two are not balanced, each other can still pursue its national interests through CETA in which the European Union pursues a comparative advantage in the processed food sector and dairy products, maritime trade routes, and labor mobility. Canada, on the other hand, is pursuing a comparative advantage in the automotive industry, foreign investment, urban development and labor mobility.
