Abstract

Media digital berbasis internet saat ini seakan menggantikan peran suatu negara. Kegiatan berdiplomasi yang merupakan elemen penting suatu negara saat ini dapat dilakukan secara online. Hal ini dapat terlihat dari banyaknya pemberitaan tentang suatu negara di media daring. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik analisis tematik yang bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk dan jenis pemberitaan masalah Papua di media daring Australia, serta mengetahui perhatian utama dari media daring tersebut. Penelitian ini mengambil data primer dalam bentuk artikel berita dari pemberitaan media daring Australia yaitu Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) dan Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) periode 2019 sampai 2020. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan beberapa tema yaitu tentang demonstrasi, kekerasan polisi, pemilihan umum, penanganan pelecehan seksual, provokator Indonesia, penghargaan aktivis Papua, dukungan untuk Papua, kebijakan pemerintah, krisis Papua, dan permasalahan negara. Tema yang menonjol dari kedua media tersebut yaitu tentang demonstrasi di Papua. Pemberitaan di media ABC bersifat lebih provokatif, namun tetap berimbang. Sedangkan, media daring SMH dalam pemberitaannya tentang masalah Papua lebih bersifat netral dan berimbang. Hal ini dikarenakan media ABC milik pemerintah Australia sehingga ada unsur politik yang bermain di dalam media tersebut, sedangkan media SMH bersifat independen yang memiliki misi untuk menyampaikan kebenaran, tidak memihak, dan tidak menyesatkan. Pemberitaan dari media daring tersebut dapat mempengaruhi hubungan Indonesia dan Australia baik ke arah yang positif maupun negatif. Nowadays, internet-based digital media seems to replace the role of a country. Diplomatic activities which are an important element of current countries can be done online. This can be seen from the amount of news about a country in the online media. The study is a descriptive qualitative study with a thematic analysis technique aimed to identifying the forms and types of the Papuan problem in Australia’s online media, and recognizing the main concerns of online media. The study used primary data which is a news article from Australia’s online media release the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) from 2019 to 2020. The study has found several themes such as demonstrations, police violence, elections, the treatment of sexual abuse, Indonesian provocatchires, Papua activists’ awards, support for Papua, government policies, the Papua crisis, and state issues. A prominent theme of both media outlets was that of the protests in Papua. The news on ABC is more provocative, but even. Meanwhile, online media in its preaching on the Papua issue is more neutral and balanced. This is because Australia’s government ABC media has made it a political part to play in the media, while SMH media is independent that has a mission to tell the truth, is impartial, and is not misleading. Reporting on the online media can affect Indonesian and Australian relations in both a positive and a negative direction.
