Abstract

As a part of curriculum in English Education Department of Universitas Pelita Harapan, Translation is a compulsory class that must be taken by the students. However, with other compulsory classes the students must attend, Translation classes' time are minimized. Hence, understanding the students' initial competences helps lecturers to focus the translation teaching. This research was conducted in three stages. First, the students who are going to take the Translation were asked to translate the given text. Second, students were briefly interviewed to understand their experience in translating. Third, three raters were involved to evaluate and to score the students' translation work. After all the data had been gathered, scores was calculated using the SPSS 16.0 and the interview findings were used to support the scores findings. The result shows that, from the five evaluated competences, the 2011 batch got the lowest score in Source Text and Situational Appropriateness competences. Three competences that got higher scores were (1) Style and Cohesion (2) Grammar and Mechanics (3) Translation Skill. Thus, it is suggested for the Translation Classes lecturer to mainly focus on the two competencies that scored low while the other three competencies that scored higher become the minor focus / Sebagai bagian dari kurikulum Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Pelita Harapan, Kelas Penerjemahan merupakan kelas yang wajib diambil para murid di jurusan tersebut. Namun, dengan adanya kelas wajib lainnya yang harus diambil, durasi untuk Kelas Penerjemahan sangat minim. Karena itu, dengan mengetahui kompetensi penerjemahan awal para murid membantu pengajar untuk memfokuskan pengajaran penerjemahan. Riset ini dilaksanakan dalam tiga bagian. Pertama, murid-murid yang akan mengambil Kelas Penerjemahan diminta untuk menerjemahkan teks yang diberikan. Kedua, para murid diwawancara secara singkat untuk mengetahui pengalaman mereka dalam menerjemahkan. Ketiga, tiga penilai dilibatkan untuk mengevaluasi dan menilai hasil penerjemahan para murid. Setelah semua data telah terkumpul, nilai dihitung dengan menggunakan program SPSS 16.0 dan data dari wawancara digunakan untuk memperkaya penemuan dari data nilai. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa, dari lima kompetensi yang dinilai, angkatan 2011 memiliki nilai terendah di kompetensi Source Text dan Situational Appropriateness. Tiga kompetensi yang mendapat nilai lebih tinggi adalah (1) Style and Cohesion (2) Grammar and Mechanics (3) Translation Skill. Karena itu, pengajar untuk Kelas Penerjemahan memfokuskan pengajaran di dua kompetensi yang diniliai rendah sementara tiga kompetensi yang dinilai lebih tinggi menjadi fokus minor
