Abstract

Both Indonesia and Thailand are middle power countries that are trying to build and strengthen relations with superpower countries, one of which is the United States. The two countries are aware that the use of hard power is inadequate so that food as an implementation of soft power was chosen to be an instrument of diplomacy. The use of food as an instrument of diplomacy is now an international issue used by the state in diplomacy. Since long time ago, Indonesia has implemented culinary diplomacy by serving regional specialties in diplomacy meetings. The year 2010 is one of the opportunities for Indonesia to promote a special dish, namely Rendang. Quickly, Indonesian cuisine became famous around the world. This is a step that has been learned from Thai gastro diplomacy which has been implemented since 2002 through "Global Thai" and "Thai Kitchen to The World". The success of Thai gastro diplomacy until now has had an impact on some in carrying out diplomacy through food to meet national interests. This study uses Neo-Liberalism theory in assessing the economic interest in the implementation of gastro diplomacy towards the United States. This study is a qualitative study using categorization and comparison techniques. Data was collected using online literature study techniques and in-depth interviews with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The results showed that Indonesia and Thailand chose gastro diplomacy because they realized the potential of culinary delights, but based on the implementation of the strategy Thailand was still superior to Indonesia. This is because Thailand's gastro diplomacy is more structured, while Indonesia still has problems in the division of labor related to the implementation of gastro diplomacy. This study recommends several things that Indonesia can learn from Thailand to improve gastro-diplomacy.
