Abstract

More and more language centers are established insome well-established universities in Indonesia, specifically in Jakarta, competing with the increasing number of language courses. However research of the similarities and differences of the language centers in Indonesia is still minimal, invisible, and uncommon to be executed and informed to the public. On that account, this study analyzes and compares the curriculum, the teaching methods, and the instructional media employed in the language centers in the three universities in Indonesia. The research design was a phenomenological research design, by discerning human experiences as lived experiences and essential phenomenon. The data were collected qualitatively by conducting in-depth interviews to the heads of each language center and the teachers and/or the academic staff of each language center. The research results showed that the three language centers had several dissimilarities in managing the curriculum. However, related to the teaching methods, almost identical application was administered in the three language centers. Meanwhile the instructional media’ availability and involvement in the language centers were really dependent on the universities’ concerns with the advancements of technology / Makin maraknya pusat bahasa didirikan di sejumlah universitas mapan di Indonesia, khususnya di Jakarta, yang bersaing dengan peningkatan jumlah tempat kursus bahasa. Namun, penelitian atas persamaan dan perbedaan dari pusat-pusat bahasa di Indonesia masih sedikit, tidak terbuka secara umum dan jarang dibahas maupun diberitahukan kepada masyarakat umum. Oleh karena itu, studi ini akan menganalisa dan membandingkan kurikulum, metode pengajaran, dan media instruksi yang digunakan di pusat bahasa di tiga universitas di Indonesia. Desain dari penelitian ini adalah penelitian fenomenologi, yang mengumpulkan pengalaman manusia sebagai pengalaman yang nyata dan fenomena yang penting. Data dikumpulkan secara kualitatif dengan melakukan wawancara yang mendalam dengan setiap kepala dari ketiga pusat bahasa, dan para guru dan atau staf akademik dari setiap pusat bahasa. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ketiga pusat bahasa ini memiliki beberapa perbedaan dalam mengelola kurikulum. Namun, berkaitan dengan metode pengajaran, ditemukan adanya pengaplikasian yang hampir identik dalam ketiga pusat bahasa. Sementara itu, dalam hal ketersediaan dan keterlibatan media instruksi di pusat-pusat bahasa inisangat bergantung pada kepedulian universitas terhadap kemajuanteknologi.
