Abstract

Literature has been used as one of the techniques in English Language Teaching for quite a long time. In Indonesia, STRADA ST. THOMAS AQUINO Senior High School is one of the institutions that has used literature in the ELT classroom. However, the use of literature to teach English in Indonesia has not much been investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the use of literature in ELT classroom, including the perceived benefits and challenges. This study used mixed-methods design which combined quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative data was collected by distributing questionnaires to respondents who were the students of XI IPA 3 and the qualitative data was collected by conducting classroom observation and interviewing the English teacher of that class. The data collected was then analyzed. The study results show that using literature in ELT classroom in Indonesia has its own benefits and challenges for the students as well as for the teacher. The benefit of using literature that most of the students perceived was that it enhanced the reading skill. The challenge that most of the students encountered was that the unfamiliar vocabulary makes them difficult to understand certain part of the story. Considering the benefits, literature needs to be used more in ELT classrooms in Indonesia / Karya sastra telah digunakan sebagai salah satu teknik dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris untuk waktu yang cukup lama. Di Indonesia, SMA SMA STRADA ST. THOMAS AQUINO adalah salah institusi pendidikan formal yang telah menggunakan karya sastra in kelas bahasa Inggris. Namun, penggunaan karya sastra untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris di Indonesia belum banyak diteliti. Karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti penggunaan karya sastra dalam kelas bahasa Inggris, termasuk manfaat dan tantangannya. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain mixed-methods yang menggabungkan pendekatan kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Data kuantitatif diperoleh dengan menyebarkan kuesioner kepada responden yang merupakan siswa kelas XI IPA 3 dan data kualitatif diperoleh dengan melakukan observasi kelas dan mewawancarai guru bahasa Inggris kelas tersebut. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa menggunakan karya sastra di kelas bahasa Inggris di Indonesia memiliki manfaat dan tantangan tersendiri baik untuk siswa maupun guru. Manfaat menggunakan karya sastra yang paling dirasakan adalah mengasah keterampilan membaca. Tantangan yang paling banyak ditemui adalah bahwa kosakata yang tidak familiar membuat mereka kesulitan mengerti bagian tertentu dari cerita. Dengan menpertimbangkan manfaat-manfaatnya, karya sasta perlu lebih banyak digunakan di kelas bahasa Inggris di Indonesia.
