Abstract

This research paper examines the unfair situation that the ethnic minorities experience as reflected through The Help novel. There are three research questions proposed in this study. The first research question is to ask what are the issues of racial injustice that the African-Americans face as reflected in the novel. The second research question is to ask how the issues of racial injustice reflected in the novel similar to Indonesian context. The third research question is to ask how the issues of racial injustice educate Indonesian readers and Indonesia. The objective of this research is to know how the unfair situation portrayed in the novel can teach Indonesian readers and Indonesia. The data collection of this research was conducted through library research. For the data analysis, the writer used the theory of historical approach in finding the historical evidence relating to the topic. The first research question is answered by the writer through the analysis of racial inequity that occurred in the US in the past. Then, the second research question is answered by the writer through the examination of the issues of racial injustice happening in Indonesia in the past. Then, in answering the third research question, the writer examines how the issues of racial injustice portrayed in the novel and in Indonesia educates Indonesian readers and Indonesia. At the end of the research, the writer found that Kathryn Stockett succeeded in portraying accurately the racial injustice in the US in the past. The two forms of racial injustice portrayed in the novel were segregation and violence. Similarly, Indonesia also experienced these two forms of racial injustice in the past as depicted in the novel. These negative impacts that the two forms of racial injustice bring as portrayed in the novel could give Indonesian readers and Indonesia some useful knowledge regarding the worst possible effects that might happen if the racial injustice does indeed happen in the future in Indonesia / Laporan penelitian ini membahas situasi tidak adil yang dirasakan oleh etnis minoritas sebagaimana tercermin di dalam novel The Help. Ada tiga pertanyaan yang akan dijawab dalam penelitian ini. Pertanyaan pertama adalah untuk menanyakan apa saja isu-isu ketidakadilan rasial yang dihadapi oleh orang-orang Afrika-Amerika sebagaimana yang tercermin di dalam novel. Pertanyaan kedua adalah untuk menanyakan bagaimana isu-isu ketidakadilan rasial yang tercermin di dalam novel mirip dengan konteks Indonesia. Pertanyaan ketiga adalah untuk menanyakan bagaimana isu-isu ketidakadilan rasial dapat mendidik pembaca Indonesia dan Indonesia. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana situasi tidak adil yang tergambar di dalam novel dapat mendidik pembaca Indonesia dan Indonesia. Pengumpulan data penelitian ini dilakukan melalui penelitian perpustakaan. Untuk analisis data, penulis menggunakan teori pendekatan historis dalam mencari bukti-bukti historis yang berkaitan dengan topik. Pertanyaan pertama dijawab oleh penulis melalui analisis ketidakadilan rasial yang terjadi di Amerika Serikat pada masa lalu. Kemudian, pertanyaan kedua dijawab oleh penulis melalui pemeriksaan isu-isu ketidakadilan rasial yang terjadi di Indonesia pada masa lalu. Kemudian, dalam menjawab pertanyaan ketiga, penulis memeriksa bagaimana isu-isu ketidakadilan rasial yang tergambar di dalam novel dan di Indonesia dapat mendidik pembaca Indonesia dan Indonesia. Dari hasil penelitian, penulis menemukan bahwa Kathryn Stockett berhasil menggambarkan secara akurat ketidakadilan rasial di Amerika Serikat pada masa lalu. Dua bentuk ketidakadilan rasial yang tergambar di dalam novel adalah segregasi dan kekerasan. Sama halnya, Indonesia juga pernah mengalami dua bentuk dari ketidakadilan rasial tersebut di masa lalu sebagaimana yang tercermin di dalam novel. Dampak-dampak negatif dari dua bentuk ketidakadilan rasial tersebut yang tercermin di dalam novel bisa memberikan pembaca Indonesia dan Indonesia beberapa pengetahuan yang bermanfaat mengenai dampak terburuk yang mungkin terjadi jika ketidakadilan rasial memang benar terjadi di masa depan di Indonesia.
