Abstract

Film The Hate U Give merupakan sebuah film Hollywood yang diproduksi pada tahun 2018 oleh Fox 2000 Pictures. Film ini menceritakan bagaimana keadaan seorang siswa yang tumbuh dan besar di lingkungan mayoritas berkulit hitam yang bernam Garden Heights namun bersekolah di SMA bergengsi di pinggiran kota yang di mana berisikan mayoritas siswa berkulit putih. Segala upaya telah Starr berikan untuk menyeimbangkan dua dunia yang berbeda ini, seketika hancur ketika Starr menjadi satu-satu nya saksi dari tragedy penembakan yang melibatkan sahabatnya sendiri oleh karna kesalahpahaman dari seorang polisi berkulit putih. Kejadian ini menjadi titik terang untuk masyrakat berkulit hitam untuk mengemukakan suara mereka. Metodologi penelitian yang digunakan dalam meneliti film The Hate U Give ini adalah kualitatif dengan acuan pada teori semiotika Roland Barthes. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah film The Hate U Give itu sendiri. Objek dari penelitian ini adalah rasisme yang terkandung di dalam film The Hate U Give. Melalui penelitian ini, peneliti melihat bagaimana cara film ini merepresentasikan rasisme melalui tindakan konkrit dari setiap potongan scene yang merujuk ke teori semiotika Roland Bartes yang mengkaji pemaknaan sebuah tanda yang ditelusuri melalui komunikasi verbal berupa lisan dan tulisan serta komunikasi non-verbal yang melibatkan streotip, stigma, gestur tubuh, dan mimik wajah. Lalu, ditemukan bahwa tragedi yang terjadi pada film The Hate U Give memiliki relevansi dengan realita isu dan kasus yang terjadi di kalangan masyarkat Amerika hingga saat ini. / The film The Hate U Give is a Hollywood film produced in 2018 by Fox 2000 Pictures. This film tells the story of a student who grows up and grows up in a predominantly black neighborhood named Garden Heights but attends a prestigious high school on the outskirts of the city where the majority of students are white. Every effort Starr has put in to balance these two different worlds, is suddenly shattered when Starr becomes the only witness of a shooting tragedy involving his own best friend due to a misunderstanding of a white policeman. This incident became a bright spot for black people to raise their voices. The research methodology used in researching the film The Hate U Give is qualitative with reference to Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The subject of this research is the film The Hate U Give itself. The object of this research is the racism contained in the film The Hate U Give. Through this research, the researcher saw how this film represented racism through the concrete actions of each piece of the scene which refers to Roland Bartes' semiotic theory which examines the meaning of a sign traced through verbal communication in the form of oral and written as well as non-verbal communication involving stereotypes, stigma. , gestures, and facial expressions. Then, it was found that the tragedy that occurred in the film The Hate U Give has relevance to the reality of issues and cases that have occurred among the American society to this day.
