Abstract

Every neighborhood should provide a neighborhood park for its residents to do their activity, including children’s activity. However, nowadays, more neighborhood parks are empty and children are not willingly to travel to the nearest park independently. Children prefer to play on the street in front of their house. This phenomenon raises two questions. What are the factors that influence children to play on neighborhood park? What are the factors that influence children’s walking distance to the park independently? This study is based on qualitative research, and data collections are gathered through literature study, observation, and interview. Literature study is done to understand what are the factors that affect children’s walking distance to the neighborhood park on their own. Observation and interview is done based on the factors from literature study, and the interview is done with children, aged 6- 12 who play in the park and parents who accompany them. Analysis is done to answer two questions. In conclusion, based on the analysis, the factors that influence children to play on neighborhood park independently are physical factor of the neighborhood park, such as neighborhood park’s size, facilities, and commercial program. The factors that influence children’s walking distance are physical factor of the neighborhood park, and neighborhood area’s factor which is block size. There are also factors that influence children’s independence to go to the neighborhood park on their own. That factors are neighborhood area’s factor, such as nodes and pedestrian. This research can be a reference and consideration for the government, designers, and developers, to create an open space in neighborhood area.
