Abstract

Car-free day is a condition in which some roads are closed from motorized traffic for several hours to be used as a public open space for the city. Car-free day is an artificial physical symptoms in which the expression of a physical space, but its formation is caused by human activity. Activities inside car-free day occupy a certain space on the street itself, so there are space-making elements on the road to trigger various activities. This research aims to find out what space-forming elements in a road that can generate activity on a car-free day and this research also aims to find out how space-forming elements can generate activities on Jakarta’s car-free day. This research was conducted at Sudirman-Thamrin road when car-free day occurs. This research was divided into three spatial types, space beneath infrastructure, space around landmark and intersections. The method used to collect data is through observation and interviews. The result shows that there are three space-making elements, which are space, street furniture and tree. The result shows that space around landmark are triggering most activities on implementation of Jakarta’s car-free day. In addition, seating elements and shading elements play a major role to trigger both active and passive activities on the implementation of Jakarta’s car-free day.
