Abstract

Christian Church consists of many denominations which led to a rivalry between one stream to another stream, so that Christian church is now losing its symbolic performance and becoming more like a ballroom or multi-function hall. It also affecting the design of the Christian church which no longer in accordance to the standard. Church architecture affects the activity of worship in the church. Church architecture has an important role to create a religious meaning in the building. The religious meaning in the Christian church can be achieved with the symbolic performance optimization in the Christian Church design. Human senses are the part of human that is responsible to feel the building symbolic performance. The design of this Christian church applied the performance optimization which is achieved through the symbolic elements of church architecture, for example, through the realization of the form, scale, proportion and also the arrangement of the worship space. Additionally symbolic performance optimization is achieved with the use of natural elements such as water, vegetation and lighting. The design is also presented and examined according to the church space program standards based on activity within the church. Symbolic performance optimization on the design is highlighted on the roof element, especially in the worship main hall. This design has a radial space organization for interaction between visitors. This design applied symbolic elements and natural elements (water, vegetation and lighting) at the center point of the radial space. This is done to create an atmosphere in the church building that affects the human senses to feel the symbolic performance. In this design, the space programs are grouped into several categories, divided into several masses to form a sequence that supports symbolic performance that will gradually increasing and optimized when heading to the main altar, which is the main focus in the church.
