Abstract

The revitalization plan of Surabaya Zoo’s facility will focus on the system renewal of reptiles’ habitat because of the present habitat is very inadequate and does not meet the set standard, in which the standard is very helpful to promote the comfort of the animals. The present number of cages at Surabaya Zoo does not support the numbers of the reptiles’ population, which cause the placement of the reptiles to be forced into the available cages and the remaining reptiles are then placed in small cages where they are not suitable and not balanced as a place to support the living of the existing reptiles. The number of reptile species that presently are at Surabaya Zoo per September 2014 reaches 1486. This number is not proportional to the capacity of available cage. What happens then is the mixing of different species of reptiles into one big cage that is no longer livable. Due to the lack of supporting facilities and responsibility from the reptile caretaker, this design is dremed necessary as an upgrade in further development of Kebun Binatang Surabaya. Ensuring the reptiles kept in captivity stays healthy, therefore keeping visitors entertained and attracted is of utmost importance. One of the best options considered is the reconstruction of each and every cage in terms of continuity. Every enclosure has its own specific and requirements to maintain and handle, thus only an integrated architectural design can provide both comfort to the visitor and wildlife. The design depicted on the six different buildings has the same purpose which is to be a shelter for different kind of reptiles. Revitalizing the facility is expected to be the solution on the reptile area of Kebun Binatang Surabaya.
