Abstract

The Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands dispute has become one the most fundamental territorial sovereignty dispute. Japan and China had been disputing the Islands for more than 40 years – since 1970. Both of the states have their own national interests which are determined by each of their claims toward the Islands. The dispute is not apart from the involvement of the third party that is the United States of the America, which is seen as the possible mediator in solving the prolonged dispute. The dispute has yet to find a mutual agreement from the appertained parties, while this prolonged dispute heated up and affecting other region’s stability and aggravate the bilateral relations between Japan and China. The goal of this research is to determine the national interest of Japan and China itself from the backgrounds of both perspectives and their claims. The goal of this research is also to determine the involvement of the United States and its role in this dispute. This research consists of the perspectives of Japan, China, and the United States, which is believes to fit as a mediator to solve the dispute and to bring the stability in the region. This research uses descriptive analysis method with qualitative approach. Concepts that used in this research are: neorealism perspective as the macro theory that embracing the whole other concept branches, followed by the nature of the state and sovereignty itself to define the characteristics of the state itself which are not apart from the sovereignty, security dilemma, national interest as the main concept of this research, territorial dispute, and the last is balance of power as become the resolution. The result of this research shows that the claims of Japan focuses on the observation, long experience and data while China from the historical background. The national interests of both states are also similar and still defending their administration right as the claimants of the Islands. The United States also involved in Senkaku Islands even long before the dispute, and by recommending the mediation as in the conflict resolution, the United States is believed to be the good mediator, as Japan and the United States are bonded in Security and Peace Treaty. However, Japan and China are strengthening their military power for defense with United States giving the backups.
