Abstract

Beauty is claimed to be part of women‟s life. It is one of women‟s biggest dreams to become beautiful as how it is constructed by the society. However, a lot of women unintentionally and unconsciously turn that dream into such a harmful obsession. The efforts that women do to get beautified are not only by using all kinds of cosmetic products and having beauty treatments, but also deciding to have different kinds of cosmetic surgery with its noxious risks. This phenomenon is depicted in the famous short animation film called “Supervenus” created by French filmmaker, Frédéric Doazan. By using qualitative approach and Roland Barthes‟ semiotics method, this research is conducted to find the representation of women and beauty in the film. Further discussion about the findings will be based on The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf, The Concept of Body by Michel Foucault and Power Imbalances by Stuart Hall. The result of the analysis shows that the figure of woman in the film is represented as a passive, mute and just accepting all kinds of cosmetic surgery that is applied to her body during the process of body reconstruction. Hence, the woman is called “Supervenus” – super woman, in satirical way. She is willing to sacrifice her body to be reconstructed, no matter how painful it could be to become beautiful as what it is believed in the beauty myth; which turns out to be controlled by the patriarchal system and utilized by the capitalist industries such as beauty and medical industry.
