Abstract

Film is an audio-visual media that is able to represent the social reality that occurs in real life. One of the films that became the focus of this research was Ngenest film. This film is interesting to be studied because of telling the racist treatment in comedy form. From the phenomenon, researcher want to know how the representation of racism against Tionghoa ethnic in Ngenest. By using the critical paradigm, Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis method, as well as representation theory, semiotic and cultural studies, researcher attempted to explore deeper into Ngenest. The results of this study indicate that racism occurs in both directions, either from Native Indonesian Ethnic to Tionghoa Ethnic, or vice versa. In addition, there is an identity ambiguity on Tionghoa ethnicity. The "Cina" labeling that makes Tionghoa ethnic people regarded as "outsiders" makes their identity ambiguous. One of the myths inherent in Tionghoa ethnicity is that they are always exclusive. On the contrary, Ernest, who is the main character in the Ngenest film, shows an open attitude. This shows that Ngenest represents the Tionghoa ethnic social inclusiveness. Overall, both Tionghoa ethnic and Native Indonesian ethnic people still embrace to the view of racism, so it can be concluded that social integration is still difficult to materialize. / Film merupakan media audio-visual yang mampu merepresentasikan realitas sosial yang terjadi dalam kehidupan nyata. Salah satu film yang menjadi fokus dalam penelitian ini adalah film Ngenest. Film ini menarik untuk diteliti karena menceritakan perlakuan rasis dalam bentuk komedi. Dari fenomena tersebut, peneliti ingin mengetahui bagaimana representasi rasisme terhadap etnis Tionghoa dalam film Ngenest. Dengan menggunakan paradigma kritis, metode analisis semiotik Roland Barthes, serta teori representasi, semiotik dan kajian budaya, peneliti berupaya untuk mengekplorasi lebih dalam film Ngenest. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa rasisme terjadi secara dua arah, baik dari etnis Pribumi kepada etnis Tionghoa, maupun sebaliknya. Selain itu, terdapat ambiguitas identitas pada Etnis Tionghoa. Pelabelan “cina” yang membuat etnis Tionghoa dianggap sebagai “orang luar” membuat identitas mereka menjadi ambigu. Etnis Tionghoa kerap kali merasa harus menyamarkan identitas etnis dan kebudayaan mereka agar dapat bertahan di dalam kehidupan sosial. Salah satu mitos yang melekat pada etnis Tionghoa adalah mereka selalu bersikap eksklusif. Namun sebaliknya, Ernest yang merupakan pemeran utama dalam film Ngenest menunjukan sikap terbuka. Ernest bahkan menikahi perempuan pribumi. Hal ini menunjukan bahwa film Ngenest merepresentasikan inklusivitas sosial etnis Tionghoa. Secara keseluruhan, baik etnis Tionghoa maupun etnis Pribumi masih menganut pandangan rasisme, sehingga dapat disimpulkan integrasi sosial masih sulit terwujud.
