Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how recasts influence the students’ writing accuracies. A recast is a method that is commonly used to correct students’ errors in English writing. This method can be implemented in various ways and steps. The implementation of recast is supported by explicit corrections. The methods are implemented well in developing the skills, such as writing, speaking and reading. Writing is a skill that may become the foundation for the learning processes of a student. This skill often gets insufficient attention. As a result, students often make many mistakes in writing in English. An action research design with two cycles was applied in this study, involving six participants of the English class from the Language Level 5.1 in the Private School X in Jakarta. Apart from the pre-test, progress test and post-test, the interviews were conducted to collect the data from the research participants, who were also expected to write their journals. In order to have a better picture of what was really taking place in the classroom, some observations were also carried out. The results have indicated that the common errors occurring in English writing are the inaccurate use of spellings, mechanics, grammar, and organizations. At the end of this study, some recommendations for English teachers, school administrators and future researchers have been formulated to improve the understanding about the effects of recasts to the learners’ writing accuracies.
