Abstract
To support children’s English they need English vocabulary and reasoning skill. At IPEKA Plus BSD school, communication in English is needed every day so children need the cognitive skills to understand the words. Purposes of this research are to apply storytelling method to develop English vocabulary and cognitive skill. This is a classroom action research with one pre-cycle and three cycles for the action in the classroom. The subjects are children aged 3-4 years old at IPEKA Plus School BSD, Tangerang. Triangulation is the method used for the data collection: field reports, rubrics and student’s worksheets. Data analysis was applied using data reduction, data description and conclusions. The results of this research are: (1) keywords and questions about stories used in the storytelling method can help children to develop English vocabulary and cognitive skill, (2) children’s English vocabulary can be used for daily communications (3) cognitive skills develop by continuing and giving opinions about stories. / Kosakata bahasa Inggris serta kemampuan kognitif dibutuhkan sejak usia dini untuk menunjang kemampuan anak dalam berbahasa Inggris. Penggunaan bahasa Inggris di sekolah IPEKA Plus BSD merupakan hal yang digunakan setiap hari sehingga dibutuhkan pemahaman terhadap kosakata bahasa Inggris. Tujuan dari penelitian tindakan kelas ini adalah menerapkan metode bercerita untuk mengembangkan kosakata serta kemampuan kognitif anak usia 3-4 tahun serta melihat hasil dari penerapan metode. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian tindakan kelas dengan tahap sekali pra-siklus serta tiga kali siklus sebagai bentuk dari tindakan. Subjek penelitiannya adalah anak usia 3-4 tahun di sebuah sekolah di daerah BSD, Tangerang. Pengumpulan data menggunakan triangulasi yaitu catatan lapangan, rubrik serta lembar pekerjaan siswa. Analisis data dilakukan dengan cara mereduksi data, mendeskripsikan data serta membuat kesimpulan. Berdasarkan penelitian, hasil yang didapatkan adalah: (1) metode bercerita dengan memberikan kata kunci serta pertanyaan seputar cerita mampu mengembangkan kosakata bahasa Inggris dan kemampuan kognitif anak, (2) kosakata bahasa Inggris anak bertambah sehingga dapat digunakan sabagai alat komunikasi setiap hari, (3) kemampuan kognitif anak berkembang dengan adanya kegiatan melanjutkan cerita serta memberikan pendapat mengenai cerita yang didengarkan.
