Abstract

Kemisikinan adalah isu sosial yang menjadi masalah besar dan sedang berlangsung di berbagai negara. Banyak media massa menyuarakan permasalahan tersebut untuk menciptakan perubahan. Sebagai fungsi dari komunikasi massa, musik menjadi sarana untuk menggambarkan dan menginformasikan kemiskinan. Penyanyi dari berbagai aliran musik seperti rock, hiphop ataupun pop menulis lirik mengenai hal tersebut, termasuk penyanyi pop asal Amerika Serikat, Pink. Ditahun 2017 Pink merilis lagu yang berjudul “What About Us” sebagai single utama dari album ke tujuh “Beautiful Trauma”. Lagu tersebut juga digunakan oleh UNICEF dalam mengadakan kampanye untuk memperingati hari anak sedunia pada tanggal 20 November 2017, yang mana lagu “What About Us” dinyanyikan oleh anak-anak dari 130 negara dengan latar belakang yang berbeda. Dari fenomena tersebut, penulis merumuskan pertanyaan penelitian (RQ) menjadi: “Bagaimana Representasi Kemiskinan Dalam Lirik Lagu “What About Us” oleh Pink. Peneliti menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif analisis eksplorasi dan deskripsi. Analisa semiotika dari Roland Barthes digunakan untuk menganalisa penelitian ini. Pengumpulan data dilakukan degan data primer yaitu melalui lirik lagu dari “What About Us” serta data sekunder berupa buku, jurnal, majalah, koran, kampanye UNICEF dan rekaman wawancara. Kesimpulannya, hasil dari penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa lirik lagu “What About Us” merepresentasikan kemiskinan. / Poverty is one of the biggest on going social issues that take place in many countries around the world. Many of mass media voice the problem hoping there is change. As part of mass communication, music used to describe and inform about poverty. Singers from different genres of music such as rock, hip-hop and pop wrote lyrics about the issues, one of them is singer from United States, Pink. In 2017 Pink released “What About Us” as lead single in her 7th album, “Beautiful Trauma”. The song used by UNICEF for remembering children’s day campaign on 20 November 2017 sung by 130 children around the world from different backgrounds. Through this phenomena, author formulate research question as “How representation of poverty in the lyrics “What About Us” by Pink?” Author using qualitative method, exploratory and description analysis. Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory used to analyze this research. Data collected by primary through the lyrics of “What About Us” and secondary taken from books, journals, magazines, newspapers, UNICEF campaign, and recorded interview. In conclusion, the study results, “What About Us” does represent poverty
