Abstract

Background: Academic stress is often experienced by students due to various pressures, such as the desire to show achievement, academic competition, and assignments. About 6% of students in Southeast Asia commit suicide due to severe academic stress. In Indonesia more than 60% of nursing students experience mild to severe academic stress. Therefore, nursing students need to have appropriate coping strategies to deal with academic stress. Aim: To describe nursing students’ coping strategies on academic stress from various article sources. Methods: This literature study used the thematic analysis: a simplified approach. The databases used are Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed. The article selection process used PRISMA flow diagram and JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for results analysis. Results: From the five articles analyzed, it was found that nursing students who experienced academic stress used emotion-focused coping and problem-focused coping with various strategies, usage, advantages and disadvantages. Both are effective in dealing with stress, therefore nursing students can determine which coping strategies that are applicable based on individual character and type of problem. Recommendation: Future researchers are expected to find journals or articles that can be used to manage academic stress with appropriate coping strategies for nursing students.
