Abstract

Background: Orthosiphon is a medicinal plant believed to reduce blood glucose levels. However, there remains a need to establish a strong evidence base to support the use of Orthosiphon as an anti-diabetic agent. Objective: This integrative review of literature was conducted to review and synthesize the results of published evidences about the effectiveness of Orthosiphon in reducing blood glucose levels. Method: Articles were extracted from five online data bases. A total of 1,531 articles were extracted during the initial search. After the elimination process, 17 articles were included for the final analysis. Results: Of the 17 articles, nine were in-vitro experiments and eight were in-vivo experiments using rats. None of the articles included in final analysis was conducted on humans. The result revealed five important aspects regarding the use of Orthosiphon as a treatment for diabetes: (1) effectiveness, (2) preparation, (3) composition, (4) mechanisms of action and (5) comparison of its effectiveness to conventional oral hypoglycemic agents (OHA). Recommendations: It is recommended that future research on the effectiveness and side effects of Orthosiphon involving human subjects be conducted. It is also important to explore cost-effective innovations to preserve and package the glucose-lowering compounds found in Orthosiphon for mass production.
