Abstract
Cellular phone services are quickly growing. The number of users keeps increasing from time to time. One of the many services provided by cellular providers is the Short Message Service, or SMS. The service is widely used by users due to its ease of use and low price. This project focuses on the Quality of Service (QoS) of one cellular service provider in Indonesia, dubbed operator “X”. Data acquisition is done by sending text messages through operator “X” as the cellular service provider. Text messages are sent to three different locations: Karawaci (Tangerang), Tomang (Central Jakarta), and Pluit (North Jakarta). On each location are three message recipients, subscribing to operators “X, “Y”, and “Z”. Analysis of QoS of SMS from operator “X” is done by calculating delay and percentage of failed message sending. The data obtained is then categorized according to conditions of sending: the time of sending which are national holidays (Idul Fitri, Christmas, and New Years day), movement while sending, and sending two-linked messages. From the test results, it is known that the QoS of SMS of operator “X” tends to be worse during national holidays, if messages are sent while moving, and if messages are two-linked. This is shown by the increase of average time needed for messages to arrive and the percentage of failed message deliveries in the three test conditions. But in general, the SMS of operator “X” is considered acceptable according to the national standards of Indonesia, which is 75% of the messages sent has to arrive within three minutes./ Perkembangan layanan telepon selular terjadi dengan begitu pesat. Penggunanya terus meningkat dari waktu ke waktu. Salah satu layanan yang disediakan oleh operator-operator selular adalah pengiriman pesan singkat atau biasa disebut dengan Short Message Service (SMS). Layanan ini banyak diminati oleh pengguna karena proses pengirimannya relatif mudah serta harganya lebih terjangkau. Pada Tugas Akhir ini dibahas Quality of Service (QoS) salah satu operator layanan telepon selular di Indonesia, yaitu operator “X”. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan mengirim sms menggunakan operator “X” sebagai operator pengirim. Sms dikirim ke tiga lokasi penerima yang berbeda, yaitu Karawaci (Tangerang), Tomang (Jakarta Pusat), dan Pluit (Jakarta Utara). Pada masing-masing lokasi penerima terdapat tiga telepon selular dengan sim card operator “X”, “Y”, dan “Z”. Analisis QoS layanan SMS operator “X” dilakukan dengan menghitung waktu tunda serta persentase sms gagal dari percobaan yang dilakukan. Data yang diperoleh dikelompokkan berdasarkan kondisi pengiriman, yaitu ketika hari libur nasional (Idul Fitri, Natal, serta Tahun Baru), dalam kondisi bergerak, serta pengiriman sms dua link. Dari hasil penelitian diketahui bahwa QoS layanan SMS operator “X” cenderung memburuk pada hari libur nasional, bergerak, serta dua link. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan meningkatnya waktu tunda rata-rata dan persentase sms gagal pada ketiga kondisi tersebut. Namun secara keseluruhan, layanan SMS operator “X” tergolong baik, karena telah memenuhi standar yang berlaku di Indonesia, yaitu 75% sms yang dikirim memiliki waktu tunda kurang dari tiga menit.
