Abstract

Small world is a phenomenon which was first proposed by Stanley Milgram in 1967. Milgram concluded that all people in the world are just as far apart as six levels (six degrees of separation), so the world seems to be small. In this thesis, the network is modeled as small world of human social networks in everyday life and it is traced using the Milgram experiment on the scope of Universitas Pelita Harapan. Experiments conducted by distributing questionnaires to students which contain general questions about the university and the pattern of gadgets use. The results of this study indicate that the small world phenomenon is shown to occur in UPH with an average hop of 2.42. The questionnaires are returned with a high success rate of 91.83%. Hotspot phenomenon was also found with the help of several parameters, such as the chain of information, the node position in the network, the anchor questions, the activeness in the organization, and the number of Facebook friends. There are 12 hotspots consisting of 8 strong hotspots and 4 local hotspots. In addition, the centrality of the hotspot approximate the average population’s response of the most frequently used gadgets, functions, and the provider of the gadget with an average value of 64.79%. It is observed that the answersgiven by hotspots adequately represent the overall average response of the network. For gadget usage patterns in UPH, Blackberry, chatting applications, and XL provider is the most often used for each category. / Small world adalahf enomena yang pertama kali dikemukakan oleh Stanley Milgram pada tahun 1967.Milgram menyatakan bahwa semua orang di dunia hanya terpisah sejauh enam tingkat (six degrees of separation), sehingga dunia seolah menjadi kecil (small world). Pada skripsi ini, jaringan small world dimodelkan seperti jaringan pertemanan manusia dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dan ditelusuri menggunakan percobaan Milgram pada lingkup Universitas Pelita Harapan. Percobaan dilakukan dengan cara membagikan kuesioner untuk mahasiswa UPH yang berisi pertanyaan umum seputar universitas dan pola penggunaan gadget. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa fenomena small world terbukti terjadi di UPH dengan rata-rata hop sebanyak 2,42. Keberhasilan kuesioner dalam penelitian ini mencapai hasil yang cukup tinggi yaitu sebesar 91,83%. Fenomena hotspot juga ditemukan dengan bantuan beberapa parameter, seperti: rantai informasi, posisi node dalam jaringan, pertanyaan jangkar, keaktifan dalam organisasi, dan jumlah teman Facebook. Terdapat 12 buah hotspot yang terdiri dari 8 buah hotspot kuat dan 4 buah hotspot lokal. Selain itu, sentralitas hotspot mewakili jawaban rata-rata dari populasi jaringan mengenai gadget yang digunakan, fungsi, dan provider yang digunakan pada gadget dengan nilai ratarata 64,79%. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa jawaban rata-rata hotspot cukup mewakili jawaban dari keseluruhan jaringan.Untuk pola penggunaan gadget di UPH, Blackberry, chatting, dan provider XL adalah hal yang paling sering dipakai untuk masing-masing kategori.
