Abstract

The Work From Home (WFH) policy which had implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, demands a more flexible way of working. In which one of the answers, companies can decentralize their headquarters to a co-working space as a solution to issues of productivity, cost efficiency, and collaboration. However, the open-plan concept in co-working spaces had known for its minimal spatial boundaries which are precisely what is needed to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The architectural field introduces the concept of a threshold as a boundary which is expected to be able to present components or elements related to preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus in an open-plan workspace. Hence, this study aims to produce a safe and comfortable workplace design in the form of an open-plan co-working space as an approach to the headquarter decentralization concept related to the COVID-19 phenomenon. This research had conducted using literature study methods and case studies. Literature studies had conducted to learn the characteristics of an open-plan co-working space, the COVID-19 workplace health and safety policy, and the threshold space design theory. The case study analysis which had been conducted on the WeWork co-working space of Menara Astra and Revenue Tower results in a strategy for designing an open-plan co-working space through a threshold approach divided into two design scales. The macro design scale focuses on defining the boundaries between workspace zones, while the micro design scale focuses on defining a safe distance space covering a turning radius of at least one meter for each individual regarding the COVID-19 protocol in the workspace. The design process begins with site selection and site analysis based on the concept of headquarter decentralization and the capacity of the open-plan co-working space building related to the COVID-19 protocol. The concept of decentralization was adopted as a design concept to support the threshold role in designing a safe and comfortable open-plan co-working space related to the COVID-19 phenomenon.
