Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a transition period from children to adults in age range of 10-19 years. Many things develop during this period, one of which is eating habits, such as eating snacks often, rarely eating fruits and vegetables, resulting in an imbalance in adolescent nutritional status. Based on preliminary studies that have been conducted, there were seven out of ten teenagers have bad eating habits. Objective: To identify the relationship of eating habits with the nutritional status of adolescent boarders in a university faculty in western Indonesia. Methods: The population of this correlational quantitative study was adolescents aged 18-19 years who live in the dormitory of a university faculty in western Indonesia. The sampling technique used was a accidental sampling with 192 respondents. The instrument used was a questionnaire which belongs to Johnson et al. (2002) and has been translated into Indonesian and modified. Results: Chi-Square analysis showed no significant correlation between eating habits with the nutritional status of adolescent boarders (p = 0.764). Conclusion: The nutritional status of boarding adolescents must be maintained within the normal range to support the lecture/ college and clinical activities undertaken. Recommendation: It is expected that adolescents will maintain the habit of eating with sufficient food composition to obtain a balanced nutritional status. Further research can analyze other factors that influence nutritional status such as physical activity, social environment, and stress levels.
