Abstract

Green tea (Camellia sinensis Linn.) is widely consumed by people in Indonesia, but green tea (Camellia sinensis Linn.) dregs which are waste have not been utilized optimally. Green tea dregs are thought to still have secondary metabolite compounds that have the potential as antibacterial. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop the potential utilization of green tea dregs as a cosmetic product in the form of a peel off gel mask with an active ingredient of 96% ethanol extract of green tea dregs (Camellia sinensis Linn.) using a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) as a gel base. Green tea dregs extract was made by maceration method with 96% ethanol as solvent. Then a peel off gel mask was made in three formulas with different variations in the concentration of the gel base, namely 10% PVA and 2% HPMC; PVA 8% and HPMC 3%; PVA 5% and HPMC 4%. Evaluation of the peel off gel mask produced, namely in the form of organoleptic test, pH test, homogeneity test, spreadability test, and dry time test. The peel off gel was then stored for 10 days at two different temperatures, namely room temperature and refrigerator temperature. The yield from extraction process was 8.04% and contained phytochemicals contents, which are alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, phenols, saponins, and quinones. The three formulas of peel off gel mask preparations produced preparations that met the test requirements for good gel preparations. However, after 10 days of storage, both at room temperature and cold refrigerator temperature, there was a change in the color of the three formulas. Then in formula 3 (PVA 5% and HPMC 4%) also seen an increase in dry time at refrigerator temperature. This is an indication of the instability of the preparation during storage.
