Abstract

To overcome the problems caused by moisture, polymer modified asphalt is used as a technology that provides a better level of adhesion to aggregates and asphalt (Debatosh Roy, 2013). The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum polymer content on the level of adhesion to hot mix asphalt. The research was conducted with the addition of Superplast polymer from Iterchemica with a polymer content of 0%, 4%, 5%, and 6%, and with an asphalt content of 6.1%. The method used in evaluating the level of adhesion is the Boiling Water Test specified in the ASTM D3625 standard, and using image processing software, namely Image J for data processing. To identify the stripping that occurs, the threshold feature is used, which in 8-bit grayscale images can provide 256 levels of illumination (threshold) ranging from 0 (perfect black) to 255 (perfect white). The results showed that the addition of polymer to the asphalt mixture was able to increase the adhesion of hot mix asphalt by looking at the parameters in the form of coating ratio. Threshold values of 20, 25, 30, and 35 were used to represent the stripping that occurred. Hot asphalt mixture with a polymer content of 5% is the optimum polymer content because it shows the highest average increase in coating ratio value compared to the specimen without polymer, which is 3.258% in the 20-255 threshold range, 3.682% in the 25-255 threshold range, of 4.037% in the 30-255 threshold range and 4.283% in the 35-255 threshold range.
