Abstract

Menurut WHO, populasi kaum muda berusia 15-24 tahun. / Background: Sleep is an important physiological process involved with homeostasis. Sleep plays a role in balancing several physiological processes. According to the WHO, the youth are defined as individuals aged 15-24 years old. Restrictions on alcohol has caused lower socioeconomic individuals and young people to purchase alcohol through the black market. The population of young people consuming alcohol increases as time progresses. Alcohol effects sleep quality that results in drowsiness during the day and reduced sleep quantity, possible through its affects the sleep process through disruption of neurotransmitters and melatonin. The aforementioned effects of alcohol affect neurotransmitters such as increased Gamma-Amino Butyric Acid, glycin, and reduced glutamate activity. Objective: To understand the correlation between the consumption of alcohol and sleep quality in young people. Method: The sample was collected via snowball sampling through several contacts with an independently filled questionnaire. Results: From the 243 respondents that fulfilled the required criteria, 80% of the participants at risk of alcohol use disorder and 66.9% of the participants that are low risk of alcohol use disorder have poor sleep quality. The percentage of participants with poor sleep quality is greater in the risk group as opposed to the low risk group. Data analysis shows a significant correlation between alcohol use disorder and sleep quality with an OR=1.982 (p=0.048 < 0.05), which indicates that the youth who fall under the risk of alcohol use disorder category are 1.982 times more likely to experience poor sleep quality in contrast to those who are in the low risk group.
