Abstract

Ideally, there must be meaningful interaction between the teacher and students using the learning content and utilizing the interface. However, there was lack of interaction in the four classes observed by the researcher in one of Christian schools in Medan. The biggest challenges that contribute to lack of interaction are one-way interaction and students who are lack of English skills. Therefore, Christian teachers have to be aware of this urgency by facilitating interaction in the online classroom. Moreover, as a learning community, the process of growing into Christ-likeness can be nurtured from meaningful interaction between all the people in the classroom. This research is conducted using qualitative descriptive method. The data is taken from teachers’ observation forms, teachers’ reflections, and students’ reflections in teaching English classes from grade X until XII. This research shows that classroom discussion supported by online tag can be used to facilitate meaningful interaction. As the recommendation, for English teachers, discussion can be implemented to facilitate and increase interaction in online classroom. Second, the school needs to do English skill tests, especially for the new students. Lastly, for the next researcher, mapping students’ English skills are needed before implementing the discussion.
