Abstract

The 21st century hails the internet as the revolutionary technological advancement. The day-to-day aspect of our lives seems to not be able to escape from internet utilization. However, nowadays terrorist groups have been using the internet to advance their agenda, especially through social media. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria or ISIS harnesses the power of social media as a tactic to extend its influence on people around the globe and achieve its glory. Indonesians, living in the most Muslim populated country, are highly susceptible to this tactic. Many have been willing to put their lives at stake for the notorious jihadi group. The national security of Indonesia has been in high alert regarding this problem. Using qualitative method, data are collected through interviews and literature study from books and journals. This thesis aims to provide detailed information on ISIS’ social media activity through various cases, along with explanation on why Indonesians are prone to radicalization, and the national security threats following ISIS’ presence on social media. ISIS utilizes mainstream social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and chat-based applications like Telegram and BlackBerry Messenger. Their purpose are to radicalize, recruit, and even guiding on how to get to Syria. Indonesians are susceptible because of the resurgence of Islamist right that gain many support from the people, the vulnerability of detached Muslim youth in the cities, and the government allowing Wahhabization of Indonesians Muslims.
