Abstract

Family business can be defined as the ownership of the organization by several family members, which have strong influence over the organization. Any business may become family firm, if the children of the firm's owner enter the business and manage it. While family business is common all around the world, in Indonesia little research is done to understand the competitive advantage that a family business may possess. Family business has always been related to sustainability issue, one of the distinct challenges for any family firm. However, the nature of family business also allows for competitive advantages that exist only for family firms. Hence, this paper will delve into PT Indatex Palur, a family business in Indonesia that operates within textile industry. This research paper is written to analyze the competitive advantage that PT Indatex Palur possesses that allows it to stay in operation for more than 45 years. Factors influencing competitive advantage of PT Indatex Palur will be taken from the perspective of owners, employees, and customers. Indonesia itself is one of the world's largest textile manufacturers, contributing to 8.2% of the total exports earnings in 2016. Furthermore, it's projected to increase in the current year of 2018 by 5-6% that will bring further opportunities for various textile manufacturers in Indonesia Qualitative research in the form of interviews with various individuals from PT Indatex Palur will be implemented, as well as direct observation to the location of the factory. The objective of this study is to create a mini-theory regarding the development of PT Indatex Palur.
