Abstract

The population of Deaf is increasing suffered by the adult population. In their indoor activities, Deaf people often find it hard to communicate with the interlocutor, either using hearing aids or cochlear implants. This is caused by the room acoustics resulting in distortion of sound waves in hearing aids. In the case of the Deaf, greater ability in peripheral vision is an advantage that can compensate for the deficiency in auditory abilities. Peripheral vision has the potential to be relied on as a source of information for the Deaf therefore, optimization of visual potential can be a way out. This study aims to address auditory needs and optimize visual potential in community spaces for the Deaf. The method used to evaluate the design quality is acoustic and visual analysis simulation. In the visibility analysis, DepthmapX is used to measure the user's isovist, integration, and room visibility, besides acoustic analysis simulation uses Ecotect to measure reverberation time and sound reflection. The simulation results and precedent studies show that to achieve an acoustic and visual balance, pocket space, organic enclosure, and top-down strategies can be used. The design site is located on Jalan Jati II, Medan due to the proximity of the site to the active community of the Deaf. In order to respond to the site problem and space quality, a circular circulation and modular adjustment of several spaces can be used. In addition, a tensile structure as well as acoustic panels and ceilings are used to support the tranquillity of the room. This research is expected to provide benefits in designing integrated facilities for the Deaf to improve the quality of the interaction space for the Deaf group and its surroundings.
