Abstract

Bibliophilia is a word to describe a person’s love for books. A group of people who loves and admires books are called bibliophiles. There are many spaces made for and around books, but most of them are made to “store” books, not as a place design spesifically for bibliophiles, or are exclusively for a select group and not open for the public. Additionally with the lack of reading interest in Indonesian citizens, therefore it is decided to create a space that could both facilitate a book lover’s activites and invites the community to participate in reading. The data are from literature study and a survey, used as the base for the design process. With an aesthetic-narative design approach that uses the characteristic forms of an era where books are bathed in glory by the society, the space could visually narrates a story around books and reading. From the design process, a space is built in a commercial building space (ruko) in EduTown area of BSD City, which has high visibility and accessability from the targeted demographics. The space combines a popular, especially amongst teenagers and young adults, hang-out space, with a space designed for reading activites. It is hoped that not only it would create a unique and new reading experience but also raises the reading interest of its surrounding community.
