Abstract

Der Hölle Rache Kocht in Meinem Herzen is the second aria of the Queen of the Night from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte opera, a singspiel opera that includes magic and masonic elements. The aria is special for its intense high coloratura passages that is unfaltering within 19 bars. Without the proper voice training and supervision, singing this aria can cause vocal damage. The demand of this aria adds on if a singer gets appointed to play the role of the Queen of the Night. The composition, text, drama, and character of this aria require a high dramatic coloratura soprano voice type. Even though coloratura serves as entertainment to both performers and listeners, it is a challenging skill that might take years to acquire. However, it is still a skill that all classical singers of different vocal type and fach must acquire for the sake of vocal health and agility. The purpose of this research is to analyze the coloratura vocal technique and artistic vision of Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen. It also serves as a guidance tool for singers who desire to acquire the coloratura vocal technique by implementing the exercises written. This research uses qualitative research method with case study approach, collecting its data through literature study, direct structure observations, and in-depth interviews with six professional vocalists.
