Abstract

Background : Sleep plays an integral role in one’s immunological processes, therefore good sleep quality is needed to build a healthy immune system because of its relation with the activation, proliferation, and differentiation of immune cells. However, most medical students have poor sleep quality due to their heavy academic burden. Poor sleep quality causes the immune system to weaken due to decreased lymphocyte activity and decreased antibody production. This decline in one’s immune system causes an individual become susceptible to infection, hence they are more likely to experience acute illness, which indicates a decreased immune status. In light of the current Covid-19 pandemic, a healthy immune system is needed to reduce the risk of infection. Objectives : To know association between sleep quality and immune status in the medical students of UPH Batch 2019. Methodology : This study starts on January 2022 and utilizes a cross-sectional study design with the medical students of UPH Batch 2019 as the sample population. 119 samples will be selected using simple random sampling. Data will be obtained through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Questionnaire and Immune Status Questionnaire. Results will be processed using the chi-square method. Conclusion : This study shows a significant relationship between sleep quality and immune status in the medical students of UPH Batch 2019 with p value 0.003 and OR 9,075 (95% CI = 1,913-43,056). The relationship between the two variables is in accordance with the theory that good sleep quality can strengthen the memory of immune system and increase the effectiveness of the immune system in working. On the other hand, poor sleep quality can increase inflammation by interfering with the functioning of glymphatic system.
