Abstract

Vocabulary knowledge is the core aspect in learning a language, because it has fundamental role to understand and use the language itself. Vocabulary is word of language which gives certain meaning according to the context. However, a problem was found in grade VII-B of Sekolah Kristen Makedonia Ngabang. The students were not able to write words in English, they also did not know the meaning of words and did not understand to use the words in. Those problems were caused the students lacked of vocabulary knowledge. Researcher decided to use flashcards to improve the students vocabulary knowledge in learning English. The research method used was classroom action research (CAR) with Pelton model. It was conducted for two actions, from 14th of September to 5th of October 2018. There were 30 students of grade VII-B as the subjects for the research. Researcher used test, mentor and peer observation sheet, students’ questionnaire, journal reflection, and students’ feedback as the instrument of the research in collecting the data. The results in action 1 and action 2 showed that the use of flashcards could improve the students’ vocabulary knowledge. The improvement for indicator 1 (form) from pre-action to action 1 was 47.33% and from action 1 to action 2 was 9.33%, for indicator 2 (meaning) from pre-action to action 1 was 21.67% and from action 1 to action 2 was 16.67%, and for indicator 3 (use) from pre-action to action 1 was 7.22% and from action 1 to action 2 was 43%. By this, it can be concluded that learning media flashcards can be used to improve the students’ vocabulary knowledge. / Pengetahuan kosakata merupakan aspek inti dalam mempelajari sebuah bahasa, karena kosakata tersebut memiliki peran mendasar untuk memahami dan menggunakan bahasa itu sendiri. Kosakata merupakan kata dalam bahasa yang memberikan makna tertentu berdasarkan konteksnya. Namun demikian, sebuah masalah ditemukan pada para siswa kelas VII-B Sekolah Kristen Makedonia, Ngabang. Para siswa tidak mampu menuliskan kata-kata dalam Bahasa Inggris, tidak mengetahui arti kata dan tidak memahami penggunaan kata. Masalah-masalah tersebut disebabkan para siswa kurang dalam pengetahuan kosakata. Peneliti memutuskan menggunakan flashcards untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan kosakata para siswa dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK) dengan model Pelton. Penelitian tersebut dilakukan dua kali tindakan, yaitu 14 September sampai 5 Oktober 2018. Ada 30 siswa kelas VII-B sebagai subjek dalam penelitian tersebut. Peneliti menggunakan tes, lembar observasi mentor dan teman sejawat, kuisioner siswa, jurnal refleksi, dan umpan balik siswa sebagai instrumen dari penelitian tersebut dalam mengumpulkan data. Hasil dalam tindakan 1 dan 2 menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan flashcards dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan kosakata siswa. Peningkatan untuk indikator 1 (form) dari pre-tindakan ke tindakan 1 adalah 47,33% dan dari tindakan 1 ke tindakan 2 adalah 9.33%, untuk indikator 2 (meaning) dari pre-tindakan ke tindakan 1 adalah 21,67% dan dari tindakan 1 ke tindakan 2 adalah 16,67%, dan untuk indikator 3 (use) dari pre-tindakan ke tindakan 1 adalah 7.22% dan dari tindakan 1 ke tindakan 2 adalah 43%. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa media belajar flashcards dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan kosakata siswa.
