Abstract

Reading and writing are considered as the foundations for children’s future learning. To be able to read and write, children should learn Phonics, the letter￾sound relationship, from the early ages. However, based on all data gathered during observations and teaching opportunities in grade I, it was found that the students lacked of Phonics skills. Most of the students struggled to decode written language and to encode spoken language. Students misspelled simple words with repetitive mistakes most of the time, even after the material had been taught several times. In order to overcome the problem, the Bingo Game was chosen as an appropriate learning method to improve students’ skills in Phonics. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) model proposed by Pelton. It was done in five steps of issue identification, data collection, action planning, plan activation, and outcome assessment. The research was conducted from August 29, 2018 to October 22, 2018 with 24 students involved as the research subject. Several instruments were utilized to collect the data, namely; test, journal reflection, observation sheets, and checklist form. Based on the research, it wasfound that the implementation of Bingo Game improved students’ phonics skills in learning the /I/ (short i) vowel sound. It can be seen from the test results that students’ achievement in each indicator was increased gradually compared to the result before the implementation. It can be concluded that Bingo Game can be used to improve phonics skills of grade I students in a private Christian school in Tangerang. / Membaca dan menulis dianggap sebagai fondasi bagi pembelajaran siswa di masa depan. Untuk dapat membaca dan menulis, anak-anak perlu mempelajari Phonics, yaitu hubungan antara bunyi dan huruf, sejak usia dini. Berdasarkan data yang terkumpul selama observasi dan pengajaran di kelas 1, ditemukan kurangnya kemampuan siswa dalam Phonics. Sebagian besar siswa kesulitan untuk membaca tulisan sederhana dan menulis kata-kata yang didiktekan. Siswa sering salah mengeja kata dengan kesalahan yang terus berulang walaupun materi telah diajarkan beberapa kali. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, Permainan Bingo dipilih sebagai metode yang cocok untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam Phonics. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dengan model Pelton. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam lima langkah, yaitu identifikasi masalah, pengumpulan data, perencanaan tindakan, pelaksanaan tindakan, dan penilaian akhir. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada 29 Agustus 2018 hingga 22 Oktober 2018 dengan 24 siswa yang terlibat sebagai subjek penelitian. Beberapa instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data, antara lain; tes, jurnal refleksi guru, lembar observasi, dan lembar ceklis. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, ditemukan bahwa penerapan permainan Bingo dapat meningkatkan kemampuan Phonics siswa dalam mempelajari bunyi huruf vokal i. Dapat terlihat peningkatan signifikan pada hasil tes siswa setelah penerapan dibandingkan dengan hasil tes sebelum penerapan. Maka, dapat disimpulkan bahwa permainan Bingo dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Phonics siswa kelas I di sebuah sekolah Kristen di Tangerang.
