Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is important in language learning because vocabulary brings meaning. People need to know the meaning of words that are used in the language in order to be able to understand a certain language. Based on the observation, reflection journal, and test results, researcher concluded that students of VII A had limited vocabulary. They could not understand the instructions that are given by the teacher using English. The test result showed that they often mispelled words and could not translate words from English to Indonesian and vice versa. They also could not use words in sentences correctly.Therefore, the aim of this research is to improve the vocabulary mastery of students in VII A. Research method that was used by the researcher is Classroom Action Research (CAR) by Robert P. Pelton. In this research, there were two times of plan activation. The research was conducted from October 10, 2018 until October 12, 2018. The subject of this researcher was 16 students of class VII A at one of Christian schools in Sangihe. There were 8 male students and 8 female students. The data were from mentor’s feedback, reflection journal that was written by researcher, students’ test result, student’s questionnaire, mentor’s checklist, and peer’s checklist. The overall results showed that there were improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after flashcards were used in the classroom. In the first plan activation, 71% of the students could achieve the knowledge of form. 83% of the students could achieve the knowledge of meaning. 86% of the students could achieve the knowledge of use. In the second plan activation, the knowledge of form was increased to 96%. The knowledge of meaning was increased to 95%. Meanwhile, 84% of the students could achieve the knowledge of use. Therefore, it can be concluded that flashcards can be used to improve students’ vocabulary understanding in class VII A at one of Christian schools in Sangihe. / Penguasaan kosakata memiliki peran yang sangat penting dalam mempelajari bahasa karena kosakata adalah pembawa makna. Seseorang harus mengetahui arti kata agar mampu memahami suatu bahasa tertentu. Berdasarkan observasi, jurnal refleksi, dan hasil tes, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa siswa kelas VII A memiliki kosakata yang terbatas. Mereka tidak dapat memahami instruksi yang diberikan oleh guru dalam bahasa Inggris. Hasil tes menunjukkan bahwa mereka sering salah mengeja kata, dan tidak dapat menerjemahkan kata dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia dan sebaliknya. Mereka juga tidak dapat menggunakan kata dalam kalimat dengan tepat. Oleh karena itu, tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas VII A. Metode penelitian yang digunakan oleh peneliti adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) oleh Robert P. Pelton. Terdapat dua kali pelaksanaan tindakan di dalam penelitian ini. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dari tanggal 10 Oktober 2018 sampai 12 Oktober 2018. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 16 siswa dari kelas VIIA di salah satu sekolah Kristen di Sangihe. Terdapat 8 siswa perempuan dan 8 siswa laki-laki. Data diperoleh dari umpan balik mentor, jurnal refleksi yang ditulis oleh peneliti, hasil tes siswa, kuisioner siswa, lembar ceklist mentor, dan lembar ceklist rekan sejawat. Hasil secara keseluruhan menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan dalam penguasaan kosakata siswa setelah flashcards digunakan di dalam kelas. Pada pelaksanaan tindakan pertama, 71% siswa dapat mencapai pengetahuan bentuk. 83% siswa mampu mencapai pengetahuan makna. 86% siswa dapat mencapai pengetahuan guna. Pada pelaksanaan tindakan kedua, pengertahuan bentuk meningkat menjadi 96%. Pengetahuan makna meningkat menjadi 95%, sedangkan 84% siswa dapat mencapai pengetahuan guna. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa flashcards dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas VII A di salah satu sekolah Kristen di Sangihe.
